About a year ago a local longtime postcard collector "cherry-picked" a few ca. 1911 Honaker Virginia real photo postcards for me from his collection, telling me at the time that he had an album full of Honaker RPPCs "somewhere" at his house. Included in this group of 2 or 3 postcards was a Honaker Birds-Eye view, so identified in the negative, which I sold almost immediately on ebay for a good price. (I now see that a modern "copy" postcard of that exact same view - perhaps even made from the card I sold - is listed on ebay). Two or three others that came from the album were identified in pencil on the verso as being scenes of the Honaker Lumber company - one of which I still have (and which is NOW included in this lot).
So, a month ago, the same collector found - and gave me on consignment - the entire album of 280 RPPCs. I was very excited at first, thinking "Wow! 280 original ca. 1911 real photo postcards showing views of a small Virginia town!"
Sadly, the town views I anticipated were sorely lacking. The album consists almost 100% of photos of people with just the OCCASIONAL intriguing background. Too, NONE of the photo postcards were identified on the verso - as far as I can tell. (I've not examined the verso of each card).
Even so, I took the album on consignment because I figured that ebay buyers with SOME Honaker connection might be interested in the album if priced low enough per postcard.
(So, the guy who consigned this to me a month ago called me yesterday to ask if I had done anything with it yet. Yikes! He's a good friend so I guess I should get busy and list it!)
I've tried to show a good sampling with my scans - showing both the condition of the cards and showing the broad cross section of people photographed - some appear to be important local business men & women, some local civic & political leaders?, lots of kids: boys & girls, some cute teenage boys, a VERY FEW so-called "affectionate men" photos, soldiers as well as yeomen farmers & laborers and their families. There's even a photo of a man who
appears to be
African-American {4th scan, lower left - one of the somewhat less "professionally" processed postcards :-{
VERY, VERY FEW of the photos included show what APPEARS to be views of the town and
THEY are
"trimmed" down
from presumably full size postcard views to
about half of postcard standard size
. (See scan #8, upper left & right + lower right).
I'm also including the 2 RPPCs I had posted individually on ebay until today. (See scan #9 - the lower postcard is identified in pencil as "Honaker Lumber Company" on the verso.
Virtually ALL of the cards have the same AZO stamp box on the verso. A very few have other types of period stamp boxes.
This album was put together originally I think by the somewhat amateurish 1911 Honaker photographer who apparently was just beginning as a "professional" photographer. More than a few show light leaks and developing mishaps. But they ALL show something of 1911 town life in Honaker. (I pulled out the 10 or so that were complete "epic fails" as far as the development process went :-}
Another reason why I strongly suspect that this was the photographer's own album of his work is the fact that many duplicate images (some showing slightly different results from the development process as in scan #2) are included in the 280 count. Out of the 280 postcards (well maybe 275 postcards and a VERY FEW non-postcard images
[
though they are trimmed to the same size as the postcards
]
)
I would say as many as 75 are DUPLICATE IMAGES
.
All in all however, a fascinating look at a Mountain town in Virginia approx. 110 years ago.
Bid and possibly get this RPPC collection for less than per image or BUY IT NOW and get for approx. .30 per image.
All are postally unused and almost all are tabbed (NO GLUE OR TAPE USED) into their original album (some are laid in loose) which I think belonged to the ca. 1911 Honaker photographer who seemed to have just been starting at photography as there are production issues with a fair number of these rppcs, as noted above (please read my description CAREFULLY). Some are loose in the album where I pulled them out to scan them and/or to see see if any IDs might be on the versos. Some are FAIR only. Most are good or better though there's some "soiling" on some of them (ALL of it benign - ABSOLUTELY NO LIVE MILDEW OR MOLD!) I'm thinking most of said "soiling" happened during the photographic processing. RETURNABLE ONLY AS A LOT.
